William Lynch, a British slave owner from the West Indies, who left a letter with specific instructions on how to make and keep slaves. Flash forward to 2009 where we meet Nix Dunn, a Brooklyn, NY public school teacher/scholar on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Obsessed with the letter, he creates a Lesson Plan during Black History Month in order to teach his students about the psychological damage he believes still enslave African Americans today.

I. “THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW” by Sofian Khan  

Matthew Lesko, known to most as 'that guy who wears the question mark suit on late night TV', is an infomercial legend. Throughout the 80's and 90's and still keeping strong into the 21st century at the age of 67, he's been hawking his books on government grants for three decades. With titles like 'Free Money for Everybody' and 'How to Get a Grant' his enthusiastic advocacy of government programs has aroused admiration and admonition alike (not to mention sales in the millions). But who is the man behind the question marks? This short documentary is a whimsical and inspiring look at Matthew's life. A man with his own unique brand of zany wisdom.

II. “URBAN LULLABY” by Sonia Gonzalez-Martinez

An unemployed artist, Nina, who is at her breaking point in her noisy Bronx neighborhood. She is too intimidated to step to Mateo, her young, thuggish neighbor and source of the noise. They finally have a confrontation that forces them to examine how to navigate the space they both occupy.

I. “SALIM BABA”  by Tim Sternberg (2008 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short)

Salim Muhammad is a 55-year-old man who lives in North Kolkata with his wife and five children. Since the age of ten he has made a living screening discarded film scraps for the kids in his surrounding neighborhoods using a hand-cranked projector that he inherited from his father. A pragmatic businessman as well as a cinephile, Salim runs his projector with his sons in the hopes that they will carry on his legacy of showing films to the local children.

II. "DIRTY LAUNDRY”  by  Cristina Ibarra  

This fifteen-minute film was made from a collection of home movies, real-life telenovelas and my own fiction. It's about a girl's spin cycle cut short when she's asked to prepare for her cousin's quinceneras.

III. “AWILDA & THE BEE ” by Lyndon McCray 

Awilda Lopez, the baddest chick in the Bronx, is incredibly gifted in spelling. Her high school teacher encourages her to partake in the school’s spelling bee. If she wins, she will then go off to the Bronx National Spelling Bee.

IV. “STICKERS” by Daniel Maldonado

Yells the story of Tommy, a quiet yet imaginative third grader, who while struggling for his teacher’s acceptance in class, recalls the sudden and haunting disappearance of his best friend and classmate, Judy Boyer. Using an assortment of visual palettes including a 1950’s Mental Hygiene Educational film style, “Stickers” is a compelling and haunting peek into the fragile nature of childhood classrooms and their innocent cruelty.

All questions are answered when daddy comes home with his special guest, Ana Daisy, the hairdresser from the barbershop. It is at this dinner where the Dominguez family will confront the pain of the past and the uncertainty of the future.
